Computer Science 1
Computer Science I offers an introduction to computer science and programming basics. Scholars work through a series of projects using Code.org’s Computer Science Discoveries course, which empowers students to create authentic websites, video games, animations, and more. Scholars will engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem-solving, and fun.
Broadcasting
Broadcasting teaches scholars the fundamentals of journalism and journalistic responsibility and applies those skills to navigate the modern media landscape for radio, television, and newscasts. This information is applied to creating multimedia news stories covering ASTEC schools and current events and subjects taught within the ASTEC curriculum. While creating these stories, scholars learn script writing, pre-production, lighting, camera operation, editing, sound, and shot composition. Scholars produce stories that encourage journalistic integrity and objectivity. Scholars examine the story of journalism in American history and assess the current changes in how modern audiences consume information.
Film/Digital Media
Film/Digital Media explores the fundamentals of film production, including script writing, pre-production, storyboarding, lighting, camera operation, editing, and sound and scene composition. Scholars apply these skills to create their unique multimedia works. Scholars examine the moving image of their stories in history and assess its impact on culture, technology, and our daily lives. Scholars review and critique important films through various intellectual lenses and therefore develop the skills to read and analyze them as one would a novel, a poem, or a short story.
Desktop Publishing
Desktop Publishing explores the fundamentals of digital storytelling production, including script writing, pre-production, storyboarding, lighting, camera operation, editing, sound, and scene composition. Scholars apply these skills to create their unique works. Scholars examine the moving and auditory images of their stories in history and assess their impact on culture, technology, and our daily lives. Scholars review and critique important works of digital media and develop the skills to read and analyze them as one would a novel, a poem, or a short story.
Business Computer Applications
Business Computer Applications help scholars develop skills in intermediate and advanced word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and database management. Scholars work through the step-by-step process of building a business plan and how to utilize business strategies while exploring technology. Scholars produce letters, reports, brochures, flyers, notices, charts, graphs, and other materials beneficial for personal and business uses. Scholars will develop a thorough understanding of Google applications and experience presenting and speaking in front of the class. Business Essentials will also introduce the scholars to the business world and help prepare them for the economic roles of consumers, workers, and citizens in an ever-changing world.
